How to Evaluate Sustainable Textile Claims
Sustainability is a set of verified attributes, not one universal fabric label.
What brands need to know
A material may address renewable feedstock, recycled content, chemistry, water, energy, durability, biodegradation or social controls; no single claim covers all impacts. Ask what lifecycle stage is measured, which comparison is used and whether independent documentation exists. Mass-balance recycled content differs from physically traceable recycled fibre and should be communicated accurately. Durability, care, transport and overproduction also affect the finished garment's impact.
Production checklist
- Define the exact attribute
- Identify the calculation boundary
- Verify third-party documentation
- Avoid absolute environmental claims
How this affects your quotation
A reliable quotation depends on the final design, construction, fabric, GSM, colours, size range, quantity per style and colour, branding, packing, delivery country and target date. Commercial feasibility and material availability are reviewed before a price is confirmed.
